The Mt Hagen Handicrafts Group was established in 2007 under the HIV&AIDS Project of the Baptist Union of Papua New Guinea. The group comprised of women who were living with HIV, women who had resettled in Mt Hagen after escaping from tribal fights in their communities and women from the Baptist church who were living in the settlements of Mt Hagen city. In the initial stages the group was formed with the idea of putting a dissent plate of food on the table and to make ends meet such as kid’s school fees, seek medication, etc.
Over the years as the group grew in membership and gained financial literacy training the women were encourage to open savings accounts and learn to manage their finances and enable them to venture into other income generating activities. Under the HHG few women became successful but due to other compounding issues their survival was short lived.
Our Motto is to “Make Crisis History” it is our vision to make the struggles of poverty a something of the past and strive for success into the future. Our overall mission is to make bilum become a sustainable project that will support the mothers and grass roots women of PNG to be free from the traps of poverty. Establishing a market for the bilum sales will pave the way to meet our motto.
